Original Shiraz 2018

Our Fathers Shiraz 2018

Vintage Conditions

Above average rainfall in July and August 2017 filled soil profiles and dams but from then on the season was very dry. It is this dry weather that characterised the 2018 season and the low disease pressure coupled with ideal conditions for flowering and early development, set the vines up for an excellent season. With virtually no rainfall between January and March, the quality of the fruit was extremely high and it was against this backdrop that we hand-picked our fruit early in the morning of March 5th.

Winemaking

The hand-picked grapes were rapidly transferred to the winery where 35% of the bunches were left intact and the balance gently de-stemmed. After a couple of days of pre-fermentation maceration, the natural fermentation began and was accompanied by two hand plunges a day to gently extract colour and tannin.
When fermentation was complete, the wine was left on skins (and stems) for another 5 days before transferring to French oak (30% new) where it completed malolactic fermentation and 18 months of maturation.
The resulting wine exhibits a dense yet succulent, spicy blackberry fruit with hints of woodsmoke and tobacco. Most similar to the 2016 in terms of structure and weight with caressing yet chewy tannins and rich, plump palate of savoury blakc fruits.
